Because you ARE an artist…We are sharing the love of art!

Chalk Pastel Giveaway - You ARE an Artist at Hodgepodge

~ This post contains affiliate links to art supplies we adore. If you click on them and purchase, you won’t pay anything extra but you will help us continue to offer art tutorials for free. Thanks for that!

Today we are giving away the big basic set of 144 chalks (pictured above) and valued at $44.95!

Since we have been sharing chalk pastel art tutorials, we have always suggested starting with the student grade alphacolor set of 12 pastel sticks. A starter set is currently $6.40. You can get these at your local arts and crafts store, like Michael’s. This student grade starter set is what we started with and shared among our five children. You can even break a chalk pastel stick in half to share. Chalk pastels are frugal!

“I paint as a bird sings.” ~ Claude Monet

After we had been using chalk pastels a while, Nana gave us this BIG box of 144 chalk pastels. And now we want to give a brand new box to one of you!

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

AHHH I am so excited you are giving this away…we have the oil ones but not chalk and the girls have been begging for them since they did your hummingbird tutorial!

We are always creating at our home. This year I started Masterpiece Monday and we learn about a different famous artist…study their work….attempt to copy some of it and on Fridays we have it as part of our Jeopardy game!

    Fingers Crossed!

I have a big craft/art box for the kids to use in their free time, creating paintings, felt puppets, origami animals, etc. It’s always fun to see what they create.

I’d love to have the kids experiment with chalk pastels. With 10 kids, that chalk pastel set would be such a gift!

We like to share coloring pages with the children who come to the library where I work. Although many children come to the library to play on computers all day, some of the kids are just thrilled to be able to color something, and show it off to the librarians.

Perhaps he would enjoy oil pastels? He could lay down the colors and then, using linseed oil and a brush, blend them. This would eliminate that chalky feel, and also give him a bit more control then chalk pastels allow for. Just a thought. I don’t know how old he is, but I don’t think linseed oil is toxic.

I show my kids that they ARE artists by praising their ability to point out colors in nature, contrast, shadow, and texture. When they make comments about these qualities I tell them that they are seeing the world like an artist and that Gos is pleased when we appreciate His masterpiece. I think it makes them think about their own creations in a different way. 🙂

We always have arts supplies out and available for open-ended creative endeavors. We check out lots of how-to books from the library and check out fellow homeschool sites on the Internet for inspiration! We try lots of techniques and styles but they all have their favorite.

I think my daughter has the most fun and reward from just drawing — and then coloring in what she has drawn with colored pencils. She enjoys drawing the natural world, especially flowers.

I’ve been so thankful for all of your free tutorials, and we own your Sharks & Holidays books. We don’t get to it as much as I’d like to, but when we do it leaves a huge smile on my son’s face!

By having my kids experiment with different mediums and showing them the techniques of various artists throughout history encourages them that there is no one way to do art and to try something new and different as opposed to simply copying something they see.

This is such a wonderful opportunity! I found your site while searching for something other than finger paints and make your own play dough (my son had grown bored with those). As I read through your site, memories of my Nana came flooding back. She had beautiful paintings that she had created at one time in her life, but would never tell us why she decided to stop painting, Although she did foster a love of needlecrafts in us :-).
Seeing your Nana spend such loving time with the chalk paintings encouraged me to purchase my son (he will be 5 next week) a simple set of 12 chalks. His face lights up every time we attempt one of your tutorials. You have given him a way to express his feelings and he experimenting with the different colors and techniques. Thank you for igniting this passion within him

All my kids have a sketchbook of their own that they are free to draw anything anytime. I also let them create whatever they like by having supplies out or easily accessable to them when the mood strikes. Sometimes kids just need the time and space to be creative. No lessons needed. They’re naturally creative from the start.

The best activities for encouraging that they are artists have always been the open-ended, process-oriented ones; the ones guided by their own interests and muses at the time. I simply provide the best materials I can afford and have them accessible to them (one preschooler, one fifth grader) for whenever they are inspired to create.

Thanks for the chance! Pastels would be a wonderful addition to our art tools.
