We get excited about sharks here at Hodgepodge. We have a long-time, resident shark-lover. She is the one that told us all about night sharks and other favorites. With Shark Week coming up, we take a gentle approach with shark week art tutorials. With that in mind, we are sharing a brand new Swimming Shark Art Tutorial. We also thought you might like a reminder of the favorite shark week art tutorials we already have at Hodgepodge and Nana’s new set of shark video art lessons at ChalkPastel.com.

Shark Week Art Tutorials – Look Up! Swimming Shark Chalk Art Tutorial
In the style of our Look Up! Summer Trees Acrylic Art Tutorial, we bring you a Look Up! Swimming Shark Chalk Art Tutorial. I am sure I would not like to look up and see a leopard shark swimming above me! But, this is such a unique perspective and a fun shark week art tutorial. It is certainly safe to enjoy with chalk pastels!
Chalk art supplies needed: dark blue construction paper. Black, dark blue, turquoise, light blue and white chalk pastel colors.
Begin with your blue construction paper turned vertically. We will start with the under painting. An under painting is simply the chalk pastel colors layered over one another to create your background for your main subject. (Another example of under painting is our Lighting Bug Tutorial.) Since you are looking up at your shark, the light is above, at the surface of the ocean. It is a brilliant light right above your shadowed shark.
You will want to use at least two, maybe three different shades of blue to create your ocean. Once you add the layers of color, use your finger to smooth and blend the ocean colors.
Next, use your black chalk pastel to make the outline of your shark. Start with the shark’s head and curve around. Once you sketch your shark outline, you can fill the shark in with the black chalk pastel. Take your finger and blend the black chalk pastel to make your shark smooth.
You may want to use your white chalk pastel to make the light from above even brighter.
What a fascinating chalk pastel painting you have made of a dark shark against the bright light of the water’s surface! Look up – because you ARE an artist!
