It’s always fun to paint outside! And this snowman is doing just that. We love that this tutorial offers such a wonderful amount of space for individual creativity. This snowman paints whatever YOU want him to! Enjoy Nana’s Snowman Paints Chalk Pastel Art Tutorial.
Not only can you make the snowman just like you’d like him, you can design your background, plus – decide what your snowman will paint!

See how each artist chose different topics for the snowman to paint? A self-portrait by 11-year-old. Notice how the snow is blue – especially the shadows.
A lovely Christmas tree by eight-year-old (with a stack of paintings the snowman finished).
Nana also drew a Snowman Express for Lil’ Buddy to color in and finish. Complete with a snowman as the engineer! Make your own following the Train Chalk Pastel Art Tutorial!
You can even make a snowman family in the snow like 11-year-old Middle Girl did. Remember – it is YOUR painting and you ARE an artist!
Featuring You! You ARE an Artist!

- A note on chalk pastels: Pastels are an easy, forgiving medium. Fun for children and adults alike! Details on the pastels and paper we use, how and where to purchase, and links to all of Nana’s other pastel lessons are here: 100+ Free Art Lessons for All Ages plus the video The Very Few Must Have Supplies for Chalk Pastel Art. A simple set is very affordable. Nana also teaches acrylic lessons.
- The practical aspects of a mess: Pastels are blessedly messy. We always have baby wipes close by to wipe hands. We wear something we don’t mind getting stained or don a smock.

These are fantastic!! I’m sold! One of my friends told me about your chalk pastels at a convention last year. I’ve very excited to get my kids (and myself) started!

Kela! I love that you say that YOU will be enjoying these tutorials with your children – because parents are artists too! (Nana taught me that) I think you will love chalk pastels – so forgiving with wonderful results. Thank you for your sweet words of encouragement!

Just wanted to give a quick thank you for this tutorial and everything you do for the homeschooling/parenting community through your blog. We just did the snowman artist today. It went well with our Letter of the Week program for the little ones. it was a fun activity for a rainy day when homeschool parkday was cancelled. And it also makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside because it reminds me of the times as a little girl when my Aunt would teach me how to paint ceramics.

Thanks for your sweet comment – makes my day! And this is one of my very favorite tutorials. How neat that it went well with your Letter of the Week – and what sweet memories of you Aunt teaching you. Thanks for taking the time to share with me 🙂
