Take December Off & Stay Toasty Warm

We started our school year the last week of July. (I heard those gasps). Before you judge me, we started then, because it was the height of the summer heat and mosquito biting. And we started slowly, adding in subjects.

We also started in July thinking of December. See, we take the entire month of December off.

Join me at Heart of the Matter today!

Plus I’m sharing the habit of keeping Toasty Warm at Habits for a Happy Home…

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

I just tweeted yesterday that I was tempted to take the whole month of December off. Turns out, a lot of families do that, or just unschool for the whole month! I was joking, though. I’m actually looking forward to doing our regular work and adding some fun holiday stuff in there.

That is the most precious angel photo above! We do not take the month of December off because we don’t start until late August. Also, I’ve found if we take too much time away from our regular schedule (barring summer, which sets up its own schedule), everyone gets crabby. And then I, in turn, get crabby. Funny how that works!

Enjoy your many advent activities and projects. I know you’ll be busy!

How neat to take the whole month of December off! We started a little earlier this year, but not early enough to do that. I would prefer to do school year round, with frequent breaks thrown in, but my girls disagree. Most of their friends attend public school, so they want to have the same time off as they do. Hope you are enjoying your school free December!

Well, now, our Take December Off is really just a mind set…as I share in the article at HOTM. We aren’t just licking lollipops over here 🙂 But we are blessedly busy with a full calendar and take the opportunity to fully enjoy. Plus add in advent learning and so much more. This is also a chance for me to do some mid-year assessment and planning for starting back in January. We also keep up with math at least a few times a week – and take plenty of opportunity to enjoy living math – baking cookies!! It’s just a different approach to learning. Amazing what all you can learn when you declare the month off!!
