Be gone the long, intimidating art supply list! Welcome to the family table, chalk pastels.

Because we are so very passionate about this art medium, we want to be sure you know just how simple it is to enjoy chalk pastel art and how VERY short the supply list is. Chalk pastel supplies are affordable and fun!

As we mentioned yesterday, you simply need 1, 2, 3 for chalk pastel art: (1) chalk pastels, (2) paper and (3) tutorials. But first…

Prep Plus Easy Clean Up for Chalk Pastels

As I shared yesterday, part of art prep is building the habit of having art time. The more you practice, the easier it goes for you and your artists. You will be happy to know that chalk pastels are easy to clean up – with just a swipe of a wet paper towel.

If it makes you feel more comfortable, you may want to prep your art area by spreading some newspaper. Your artists can each don a smock or wear something they don’t mind getting smudged.

Having baby wipes or wet paper towels close by helps when chalk gets on fingers. Often we switch colors and need to just wipe fingers off quickly.

Chalk Pastel Supplies

It truly is so simple to get started in chalk pastel art. First off, here is a quick, three minute, overview in video form from Nana: The Very Few Must Have Chalk Pastel Supplies.

There are so many things we love about chalk pastels.

1. More on Chalk Pastels

How often can a whole family join in art time for under $10? We think it is fabulous for our five artists! First of all – chalk pastels are frugal. One beginner set of chalk pastels can be used and shared by the whole family. You can find a starter set of 10-12 chalk pastels at your local arts and crafts store. We find them at Michael’s. You can also purchase them online at Dick Blick or Amazon.

Special note – Our tutorials work best with these rather than oil pastels. Though we enjoy the oil medium too, the colors blend and layer beautifully with chalks.

Frugal tip: You can even break your chalk pastel sticks in half so that more artists can share around the table.

2. More on Paper

This is simple as well. The majority of the time we use printer paper. Yes, plain, white copy grade paper. Lately, for our Christmas and space tutorials we have enjoyed colored construction paper. Both of these are frugal!

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.
