Homemade Cookie Dough: Frugal Living

I’ve talked about them a lot. Even given them as gifts. But it’s been a while since I shared the steps to goodness. Now, I will tell you up front that this, our favorite cookie recipe, is not published online anymore for free. But…Bread Beckers Ranger cookies are similar.

Plus, they are a time investment. So, when I make them, I double them. I freeze them as cookie dough balls. So then, I can make them whenever. And when the children ask, I can say yes. And, so that someone won’t sneak and eat the cookie dough from the fridge 🙂

It’s five cups worth of freshly ground white wheat. The children like the taste of the hard white best. I prefer the soft white.

Egg substitute for four eggs (since the recipe is doubled) and because Lil’ Buddy loves these.

A cup of freshly ground flax seed. Oatmeal and all the dry ingredients mixed together, rolled in with butter and the sugars. Chocolate chips.

Rolled up…

Baked for about 12 minutes when freshly made. More like 14 minutes from frozen. All for maybe an hour (including interruptions) of time invested.

Then just a few minutes bake time away to fresh yum.

We use the Bread Beckers recipe, Oatmeal Flax Cookies. However, Ranger Cookies are very similar. Just throw in some ground flax seed. And double it. Roll up the cookie dough balls so you can pull out some for anytime. (Or you can buy the Bread Becker recipe book for $6).

This is also the recipe we use for our homemade birthday cookie cakes too! Allergy friendly!

How about you? Do you freeze cookie dough so you can say yes? What’s your favorite cookie recipe?

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

Do you know of any substitutes for flax seeds? I haven’t found any flax seed companies that have a dedicated nut free facility. Or could you please direct me to a safe flax seed company? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Heather – I have not investigated that myself. Since flax is a seed I had not paid particular attention to it other than specifically asking our allergist about it. She said it is safe since it is a seed and it is not something the younger two reacted to in testing. Though, now that you mention it I will find out about the Bread Beckers flax seed we use. We’ve used it for years without reaction. But it’s worth further investigation for sure.
