Helpful Habit: Just Take a Nap

A wonderfully relaxing habit I have fully taken advantage of this week of Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a quick afternoon nap. Just five to 10 minutes are such a help! This is a habit to enjoy after Afternoon Quiet Time is established. (I’m keeping up the habit of sharing a helpful habit on Fridays. This one from February of last year. Some of you have seen this before but have you taken my grandmother’s advice yet?…)

“Honey, take a nap.”

Some of the best advice my grandmother ever gave me. Yes, young children need a nap. But did you know that mothers need one too? “You just need to put your feet up for 10 minutes. Even if you don’t go to sleep. As long as you relax for 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll be able to face the crazy hours.”

So I have taken my grandmother’s advice ever since I became a mama. As much as I can.

Now, with children in the house, your quiet time habit must be established. Yes, before embarking on the habit of napping, my five are in their own quiet time spots. (Ideas here)

Once children are secured…

  • Find a comfortable spot.
  • Put your feet up.
  • Put your head back.
  • Close your eyes.
  • And relax.
  • Really. Relax.
  • Just 10-15 minutes.

Don’t fret. The laundry will still be there. Trust me.

The rest of our week? A short, afternoon nap was just a tiny part of our days this week. We went on a Big Apple Adventure at VBS in the mornings (see all the fun crafts on our mantle?) and played in the sprinkler or plastic pool in the afternoons.

  • Yesterday afternoon we enjoyed a Blueberries Pastel Tutorial.
  • Summertime Encouragement: I sure enjoyed this post at Passionate Purposeful Parenting on Summer Plans. Made me want to schedule up some pj days while I can!
  • Favorite quote from VBS week came from Littlest Girl at tucking in time. She rubbed her brow and said,

“I have to check my eyebrows every now and then. Sometimes I have Ritz crackers up there.”

Thanks to our weekly wrap hostess, Kris, of Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers. Be sure to click over and see her before and after weight loss photos and check out what others are doing at the start of summer.

How was your week? Did YOU get a nap?

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

You are right! The laundry is still there! I admit I DO do this habit but not always because I meant to, mainly b/c I sit down for a minute and close my eyes and exhaustion overwhelms me. But I do always feel better when I get back up! Whenever I am pregnant the 10-15 minutes extends to an hour or so!

Haven’t done it in awhile but love to! When mine were littler, I would send the older 2 to room time and put my 2 year old (who had recently transitioned from crib to bed) down for her nap. We were working on getting her to sleep in her bed, so I’d lay down across from her on her sister’s bed and close my eyes. Twenty minutes later, I’d wake up, refreshed, and she’d be asleep. Perfect! Because our quiet time was already established, getting the older ones to stay in their rooms for the duration was no problem. Love that quiet time! =)
