Aaahhhh…. I said goodbye to my dear husband and closed the front door. The girls were all at youth group. Hubby had a rehearsal. I had the house to myself for an hour and a half. Ninety minutes of quiet bliss! What would I do with myself?
How to Teach the Younger Women as a Homeschool Mom
Suddenly, the familiar tune of my cell phone began playing. I studied the caller i.d. It was my younger sister, calling from her home on the other side of the country. She always seems to call at the funniest times! The interruption changed my plans for the evening. I would now be called upon to be in counseling mode.
“teach the young women to… love their husbands, to love their children…”
(Titus 3:4; KJV)
There was a time when I didn’t feel that I served the Lord that much. I had my home, and my family, but not a major ministry at church or anywhere else. It’s easy to compare myself with women I think are doing more than me, are more successful–doing it all. Speaking, teaching, writing books, AND raising a family. Or even just supervising the church nursery. What do people at church think of all the time I spend at home?
The Ministry Being a Titus Woman as a Homeschool Mom
Then it hit me, this verse from Titus.
Let the aged women “teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
(KJV)
Here was a ministry right from my own home! Being there for my younger sister…being the “aged woman” in her life. Gently guiding her in the right direction regarding marriage, children, housework…not that she always needed help in all those areas, but I was her example and one she could go to for advice when things got difficult. I had “been there, done that.” I welcome calls from this precious sister and enjoy the ministry God has called me to. Can she call that woman who is speaking at Christian conferences all over the country? No, but she can call me.
Sometimes, it’s not the big-time, all-encompassing work that needs to be done, but the work of God through the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit. By listening to that voice, and making sure it lines up with His Word, we have our ministry, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem in comparison with others.
By the way, I also have three of my own “younger women” at home to train. So I guess I’ll be heading up this ministry for awhile, and loving every minute of it.

I am thankful for the women in my life that continue to teach me! And, you are right. We may not be accomplishing great goals in the world’s eyes but the Lord has given each of us a ministry at home and in our close circle of women. Thank you for this beautiful example.

So true! It’s so easy to think of ministry as being actively involved in the church or doing as much serving as Mrs. So and So. Over the past four years as I’ve been willing to do whatever the Lord brings my way, I’m amazed at the opportunities He has opened up. When I didn’t have a car, I was able to encourage and counsel friends through email…take meals to neighbors and friends who lived nearby. Even now, although I do have a car, I still stay close to home because I have two toddlers…and yet God has recently opened up the door for another online ministry. It’s amazing the opportunities God brings your way when you are willing to think “outside the box” and just follow His leading!!
