We always feel closer to God when we are in the Word on a daily basis. So, why do we struggle to finish reading plans or complete daily scheduled devotionals at times? I have learned a few things over the years that have helped me to be more successful when it comes to daily Bible commitments. I hope these tips will encourage you in your daily Bible commitments.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8
Bible Reading Plans I try to complete a daily Bible reading program every year. First, you have to find a reading plan that works for you. If you are struggling with time management or just in a busy season of life, choose a Bible reading plan that only requires a few minutes out of your day. This will make it easier to stick with the plan and/or catch up if you miss a day. There are many plans that give you an entire year to read the Bible. Plans such as Bible Gateway’s 365 Day Plans are great if you can only commit to a few minutes a day. There are many to choose from on the internet or you can purchase a Bible, such as The Daily Bible. There are also many Android/iPhone apps to make it more convenient. I recommend Bible Gateway’s Bible App, but choose the one that you like.
One of my favorite Bible reading plans is The Bible in 90 Days plan. I highly recommend this plan for anyone that is able to commit the time necessary to complete the daily readings, but it does require a good amount of time for each reading session. So, only do this plan if you are able to commit at least 45 minutes a day.
Bottom line, do not over commit! Most of my unsuccessful daily Bible reading goals have failed because I chose a plan that was too much for me at the time. While I do encourage you to do your best to make time to read your Bible, it should not become burdensome. You need to be still and focused to hear all that the Holy Spirit has for you.
Devotionals There are many devotional Bibles and programs that are generic such as Hope for Each Day by Billy Graham. Or you can choose one for specific groups of people, such as Trusting God Day-by-Day by Joyce Meyer that is written specifically for women. These types of devotionals are great if you can’t or choose not to pick a specific area of your life to focus on.
If you are feeling convicted by the Holy Spirit to change a specific area of your life or you are going through difficult times with your relationships, spiritual trials, illness, or finances, choose a topic that is relevant to your current circumstances or convictions. Such as The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. In my personal experience, specific topic devotions always make me feel closer to God and help to cope with difficult times in my life.
There are so many devotionals available, the process of choosing one can be very overwhelming. So, how do you choose? Will the devotional meet your needs? Does the author share your beliefs and values? The best devotionals are always ones that have been recommended to me by a Christian friend. Think of those who share your beliefs and values and ask them what devotionals they have read in the past or are currently reading. Make sure it is someone you trust, a friend or a mentor.
Bible Study with a Group I always enjoy studying the Bible with a group of fellow believers. I learn so much from others’ experiences and insights to scripture. A group study is also a great way to be held accountable to complete your reading and assignments.
Many churches offer group Bible studies. Get connected with a local church to learn more. You can also find online Bible study groups. The forums for questions and discussions are great, but in my opinion nothing beats a face to face discussion.
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20
If you can’t find a study that is right for you, then consider starting a study group of your own. Find a group of people with similar values and interests and choose a Bible study to do together either in your homes or at a local coffee shop. You can choose a curriculum to complete together or you can read the Bible and discuss each week as you would do in a traditional book club.
