The Habit of Remaining Calm

Calm-
make calm or still;
steady: make steady; “steady yourself”
become quiet or calm,
composure: steadiness of mind under stress;
not agitated; without losing self-possession;
sedate: cause to be calm or quiet
Wow, that sounds like the total opposite of who I am but my heart is to be this way when it is needed, when it would be best!! I am a very excitable, passionate and lets face it loud person! I believe this is how God made me to be BUT I do believe that there are times that even a passionately loud person needs to be calm, steady and quite. The Lord stirred me to write about this subject. You have to understand though that I desire to be this way but I haven’t gotten to the place where it is habit, yet!!
I want to remain calm in the midst of a storm, I want to remain calm when  my boys aren’t listening, I want to remian calm when we are not having a very good home school day, I want to remain calm when my youngest is having a “fit”, I want to remain calm when my dog goes to the bathroom in the house, when I burn the toast, my computer is running slow, when someone spills something on the floor right after I clean it, when my oldest complains about what we are having for dinner, the line at the grocery store moves to slow and is to long and well, I guess you get the idea by now. I want to walk in a habit of remaining calm no matter the circumstances. God has been doing a work in me in this area but to be honest, this is something I have struggled with for a very long time! I get frustrated, worried, fearful, agitated and just out right mad at times. I know how God made me and I am actually very comfortable about who I am (in HIM), I also think that there are times that it is good to be very passionate and even loud =) As I said though when it’s right and when it’s best I want to remain calm. I want to show my boys, my hubby, my family, my friends and anyone I come in contact with the Love of the Lord and the trust I have in HIM in all I do and say! I know if I walk in this habit I will be a better wife, parent, friend, etc. and I will look more like my Father in Heaven. I am a work in progress and I do know (through the direction of the Spirit) that I need this habit in my life. You may be like me or you may actually be a very calm person already. If you are take the time to thank God for that right now!! If your like me and you need this habit, please let me know so I can pray for you and I ask that you also pray for me.

“How can we gain this Habit?”
By abiding in HIM and HIS word!! That is daily abiding in HIM! This habit may not come over night (certainly hasn’t for me) BUT by the grace of God it is coming!!!

1. Daily Seek God by prayer and reading His word
2. Cry out to Him in the ‘moment’ you know you could ‘lose it”
3. Hold on to a specific scripture throughout the day, repeating it over and over
4. Offer up ‘Thanks’ to God in the moment you know you could “lose it”
5. Have a running conversation with Him through the day
6. Play Christian music during your day
7. Listen to the Word during your day (Audio)
Below is some WORD to abide in.

1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;[a] and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will[b] ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 15

Ephesians 4:29Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.

Proverbs 15:28The mind of the [uncompromisingly] righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things

Ephesians 4:26When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down.

James 1:19Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.

Peoverbs 16:24Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the mind and healing to the body.

Proverbs 15:1A SOFT answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger

He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Proverbs 17:27

A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. Proverbs 15:18

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Luke 8:25

A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. Proverbs 14:29

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,……Galatians 5:22

“Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong. Job 6:24

The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. Ecclesiates 9:17

The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17

    Angie thanks for this! I have a ‘watchword’ framed by my kitchen sink “set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips” – Psalm 141:3 and from our Sing the Word cd “A soft answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger” Proverbs 15:1

    Thank you Angie for stepping on my toes in return 🙂 I read this only moments after I lost my cool with my kids. I need to remember that their sinful behavior does not excuse my own. When I am angry with them, I need to remember to step away and go to the Lord with my emotions so I can present to my kids a calm and quiet spirit. You are definitely not alone in this struggle!

      Oh, Kendra what you said “I need to remember that their sinful behavior does not excuse my own”, is so true!! I tell myself that all the time!!! I also remind myself that if I want “right” choices from them I have to make right choices also!I have to show them it is possible to live out God’s commandments!!! Through Faith and much Grace!!! =)
