Use Summer to Build the Habit of Art

With summer just around the corner I wanted to suggest to you something. Use summer to build the habit of art. See, with all the regular, daily activities gone and all that empty calendar space, there is time. Time for relaxed art afternoons. Time to simply enjoy.

I’ve shared about using summer to build habits…

Build the Habit of Art This Summer

Oh summer is for fun! Summer can also be opportunity. See, without all the regular ‘have tos’ of school and extracurricular activities, there is time. That wonderful, empty space on the calendar. But sometimes having more time can be a challenge. So we have found a balance. Summer is when we work on those basic ‘bones’ of our days – all the while having fun and taking an official homeschool break. You can read more on Use Summer to Build Habits.

Just pick one habit to build at first. There is no sense in being overwhelmed during the summer! Start slow and steady. Celebrate small steps.

Here are a few ideas to get you started on building the habit of art and to remind you how simple art times can be. Remember, you don’t have to be a master artist (I’m not!) The point is to have fun, to focus on the smiles and to build a love of art.

Very Few Chalk Art Supplies

Gather art supplies.

1, 2, 3. That’s what we always say. You only need three things to be ready to enjoy one of our chalk pastel tutorials. Be gone the long, intimidating art supply list! Welcome to the family table, chalk pastels. More on Chalk Pastel Supplies.

Prepare the work space.

This goes a long way towards the enjoyment factor! If you are worried about mess, preparing the space will ease your mind. Chalk pastels clean up easily with baby wipes and a quick wash with soap and water at the sink. But you may want to cover your work area (we use our kitchen table) with a cheap, plastic tablecloth.

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

Thank you! What a perfect plan for our summer as we are in countdown mode, crossing another subject off our list each day as it is completed once and for all! The end is in sight and we are anxious for the fun and leisure days that this summer promises! I am very encouraged to use this time to build some positive habits in our home. Thank you!
