Winter Games 2014
I shared yesterday how much we are loving this Winter Games unit study! The story of the Olympics is so rich in history, geography, science, fascinating ideas, and events. When learning about the Olympics, you will see the important role that science plays in the games—laws of physics coming in direct conflict with the wonderful bodies that God created for each of us.
The deep and personal commitment of the athletes to achieve their best performance, their faith, concentration, endless training, and reaching out to help each other—all of these are lessons in the importance of goal-setting, persistence, and personal values for students of all ages.
With thousands of athletes contending, the events, countries, and personal stories of the competitors can be overwhelming. It will be well worth the study for those families interested in history, countries of the world, sports, and human abilities. As you study the Olympics with your family, try to focus on some of the following areas, depending on the ages and interests of your children:
- History of the ancient Olympics
- Science and the laws of physics in sports
- Sports and the human body
- World geography, both ancient and modern
- World politics and its influence on international sports
Passport France
Pack up and get ready to travel to France with Amanda Bennett’s Passport Geography™ series! This one-week unit study has been developed to provide your student with a virtual tour of France, covering the geography of this nation, as well as some of its history, art and literature, landmarks, and interesting people.
You will see and hear the sights and sounds of cities and villages, people, daily life, tourist spots, and historical places, all from the comfort of home—no passport required! We are brand new to homeschooling and haven’t really tried a unit study yet. I would love to try it out!
I guess I didn’t answer the question….ooops. My kiddos love unit studies and they help us follow a path that my dc have a passion about.
I haven’t done a lot of unit studies, but I’m eager to try them!
We’ve done a few short unit studies, and my children always love them. They largely consist of checking out many books from the library on the topic, watching some YouTube vidoes on the subject, and just generally talking about the topic. I’m looking forward to doing more of this!
Love Amanda Bennett studies and have always intended on an Olympics unit. Perfect timing! We are studying Ancient Greece.
When we first started homeschooling, we did a lot of unit studies. A couple years ago we started using Tapestry of Grace, that’s when I found your blog, and after starting Tapestry we stopped doing unit studies. But I’m glad to see how you use unit studies and incorporate them with TOG! My kids love unit studies! They keep us focused and the kids are excited to start the next day.

I never done unit studies before but I think I would like to change some of the ways I do some of my subjects
We’ve enjoyed the unit studies we have done. The kids start looking for new things to learn about the subject. It brings joy to this teacher’s heart.
We just started our first lapbook & have never done a unit study, but I’m excited to try them. It’s always great to find fun new ways to learn!
My 11 year old has completed a few of Amanda’s unit studies. My 6 year old will probably love them.
I used the summer olympics study a few years ago and it was great. Can’t wait to use this one.
We have homeschooled in the past and now we supplement our daughters education with homeschool studies. This would be great to keep my girls going this summer.
We have done a few unit studies in our homeschool. It is nice to be able to stop from our normal curriculum we use and have a little break studying something that we have an extra interest in. Keeps schooling from getting boring 🙂

I actually just ordered the Winter Games Unit Studies (on Sunday) but I would love to have the Germany and Italy ones. My parents are German immigrants. We incorporate a lot of the German culture in our daily lives but anything extra would be icing on the cake. I recently was introduced to this author and am very impressed. I would like to incorporate more of her lessons in our daily life.
We love unit studies, because they offer a variety of delight-directed learning opportunities. My daughter can focus on topics that interest her and explore the content at a deeper level of understanding. When she loves the unit study subject we are studying then she pays attention better and retains more information over time. I also adore the fact that unit studies integrate other subjects into the day. We can eliminate subjects that are already covered in the unit study which simplifies the day. They are great for focusing on special interests that my son shows, and I love using them to break up the book work routine when we are starting to get burned out.
I tried a couple unit studies a few years ago…but haven’t completed any for a long time. I think my kiddos would love to try the Olympics one 🙂

Unit studies have been a success in my homeschool with my children learning so much this way!
I love how unit studies reach across the ages, without requiring a separate set of materials! Our children have really enjoyed the unit study we’ve done, and this mom is sure we’ll be doing many more…and soon. What a blessing to our young children and our homeschool. Their knowledge retention certainly is amazing to witness, as well. Just an all-around wonderful way of teaching and learning right with them!
Our autistic son likes doing the shorter unit studies more than the four week studies although the week long studies usually take us closer to two weeks to complete! lol I was surprised by how much he enjoyed learning about and listening to classical composers while doing that study. We have decided to include more unit studies in connection to different subjects. It’s allowed us to interest our son in more than JUST dinosaurs too which means quite a lot around our house. I have even done a couple unit studies with both our 11 year old son and our 5 year old grandson which is really nice to do with the boys together!
We use unit studies to supplement our other studies. They’re great when the kids are interested in the topic, but they flop otherwise. 🙁
They help up stay focused and learn a great deal on a topic.
We have not really used unit studies as of yet. Looking forward to trying them in the future.
We’ve doing the Unit Studies for 2 yrs now and my 9 yr old loves it! We just purchased Amanda Bennett’s Olympics 2014 and Athletes of the Bible to go hand in hand. But I just hope the Art package will get him interested enough to experiment with colours & to draw/paint as he had a very bad experience with a teacher in secular schooling turning him off Art and colours and drawing….

We love unit studies….we’re mostly a classical homeschool family, but we add a couple of unit studies per year to the mix. We enjoy focusing in on one topic for a time, especially as a family.

Thanks, Hodgepodge! We use unit studies to mix things up a bit. We’ve done several Amanda Bennett unit studies as well as Konos. The level of enthusiasm for them varies with each kid. Success – yeah.
We have used unit studies on and off over the years to add variety to our homeschooling. The kids love how you go in depth with a subject.

We haven’t done a lot although we are doing an Olympic one now and I plan to use more during our 14-15 school year and get away from text books.
